Bunny had chosen a favorite book and fluffed the big, soft cushion. Everything was ready for a story, and there was plenty of room for two.Hedgehog was coming over to listen. Bunny set the little lamp in the window so its warm glow could shine out onto the path. ‘Now he’ll know I’m ready,’ said Bunny. At home, Hedgehog’s pear rolled off the table and right under a chair. ‘Oh, no! That’s for Bunny!’ he said. ‘Come back here, little pear. We have a story to get to!’Bunny opened the book, then closed it again to listen. Tap, tap. Was that Hedgehog knocking? Bunny turned toward the window. It was only a twig tapping against the glass. At last, the pear was safely in Hedgehog’s basket. Then an enormous yawn escaped. ‘Oh, dear,’ he said. ‘Bunny will be waiting!’The sky outside Bunny’s window grew blueberry blue. Bunny settled onto the cushion, and two long ears began to droop. The book was still closed. At last, a knock at the door! There stood Hedgehog with his basket. ‘I brought us a pear,’ he said. ‘And a very big yawn.’ Bunny laughed. ‘Come in. I’ve got one of those too!’They settled close together on the cushion. Bunny gave a long, stretching yawn and looked at the book. ‘That’s quite a lot of pages,’ Bunny said.‘What about just one?’ asked Hedgehog. ‘One page,’ agreed Bunny. In the picture, a duck was wearing a cup on its head. ‘That’s not a hat!’ said Hedgehog. ‘The duck thinks it is!’ said Bunny. They giggled and looked again. When they had finished looking, they shared the pear and leaned back against the cushion. There would be more pages tomorrow. For tonight, one had been just right. From his own doorway, Hedgehog waved across the garden. Bunny left the little lamp shining in the window and waved back. ‘Tomorrow?’ called Hedgehog. ‘Tomorrow,’ Bunny called back.Bunny set the book beside the bed, ready for tomorrow. Across the garden, two windows glowed in the dark. In two cozy homes, two sleepy friends snuggled down and went to sleep.
