A little help choosing
Baby shopping: buy, borrow, or wait?
You can get ready for your baby without getting ready for every possible baby problem. A short, useful list is a perfectly good place to start.
About 3 minutes
Picture the first few days
Picture bringing your baby home. Where will they sleep? How will they travel? What will you use for feeding, changing, and getting dressed? Write those down first. Keep the list small enough that someone helping you could find everything.
A sleep space needs to be intended for infant sleep and meet current U.S. requirements. Keep it bare apart from its snug fitted sheet. Pillows, bumpers, loose blankets, and positioners do not belong on the list. source
Then add modest amounts of washable clothing, changing supplies, and the feeding equipment you expect to use. Leave room in the budget for the unexpected: another delivery of diapers, a replacement part, or a meal when cooking feels impossible.
Borrow the things you can check
Everyday clothes and a few books can be lovely hand-me-downs. Look them over, clean them appropriately, and skip anything damaged. For baby equipment, get the exact model, instructions, and every required part; check for recalls before using it. A familiar brand name alone does not tell you whether that particular item is suitable. source
Be choosier about car seats. A secondhand seat needs a known crash history, identifying labels, all parts, instructions, and a recall check. If its history is a mystery, pass. source Breast pumps designed for one person should not be shared; a rental needs to be a model made for multiple users, with your own accessory kit. source
Give the extras a waiting list
Put the large bottle collection, spare stroller, nursery gadgets, and stacks of matching outfits on a separate list. After a little time together, you can ask: would this solve something that happens often? Where would it live? Who would clean it?
If someone asks what to give, a specific practical offer helps: a meal, a grocery run, or money toward an item you have chosen. You are allowed to finish the list later.
Based on current guidance and product information. Personal gear reviews will be added as we use the items.
