A little help choosing
Which sleep space do we actually need?
A beautiful nursery can wait. For now, give your baby a suitable place to sleep and give yourself room to reach them.
About 3 minutes
Keep the sleep part simple
Look for a product intended for infant sleep: a crib, bassinet, play yard, or bedside sleeper that meets current U.S. requirements. Baby goes on their back on a firm, flat surface, with a snug fitted sheet and no pillows, loose blankets, bumpers, toys, or positioners. Swings and loungers are not sleep spaces; move a baby who falls asleep there to a suitable sleep space. source
With that settled, you can think about the part that depends on your family: where it goes, how you reach in, and how long you hope to use it.
Choose around the room you have
A bassinet may appeal when you want a small early sleep space close by. Measure the whole base and leave yourself a clear path. Before buying, read when that exact model must be retired: weight limits and developmental milestones both matter. Plan the next sleep space before you reach those limits.
A crib may suit a family that wants one main setup from the start. Try the reach over the side and measure the route into the room. If it converts later, check whether the conversion pieces are included, sold separately, and worth storing.
A play yard may suit travel or a room used for several things. Try folding, carrying, and rebuilding it. Check which modes are approved for sleep and the separate limits for any raised bassinet attachment.
A bedside sleeper needs careful matching to your adult bed. Read its attachment and bed-height instructions before ordering. An attractive picture cannot confirm that it fits your bed.
Before you pay
Use the mattress or pad specified in the instructions. Avoid extra padding or a topper. If buying a mattress separately for a play yard or smaller crib, check that its label names your exact model. Matching measurements alone are not enough. source Check the exact model for recalls, including a borrowed one. source
Save money on decoration if you need to. Easy access, washable sheets, and a setup you can use correctly on a tired night are worth prioritizing.
