A story together

The same book. Again?

You may know every word. Your child may still be delighted when that particular book comes off the shelf. It's fine to keep the favorite in the pile.

About 2 minutes

Familiar doesn't mean used up

Babies and toddlers often return to the same book or picture. As the story becomes familiar, some children begin to anticipate a sound, repeat a line or tell you what comes next. You don't have to replace a favorite just because it's familiar to you. source

Hearing the same story again can give your child another chance to get to know its words. Familiar context has helped children learn new words in a small study with three-year-olds. You don't need to count repeats or turn your evening into a lesson. Let the book stay in the pile while your child enjoys coming back to it. source

Keep it familiar, or notice one new thing

You can simply read the book the usual way. If your child enjoys joining in, pause before a well-known sound or line and leave room for them. A gesture or a grin is welcome too. Some older toddlers even enjoy telling a familiar story in their own way. source

For a change, follow a small character in the background. Notice where the red boot has gone. Whisper the mouse's line. Or let your child choose which picture you linger over. Offer one little change and see whether it's welcome; there is no need to improve every reading.

If your child wants the exact words in the exact order, keep those. You can save your splendid new bear voice for another day.

You get a say as well

It is reasonable to say, “I'll read it once more, and then I'm resting my voice.” You can offer to look at the pictures together afterward, or put another book beside it for tomorrow. A favorite book doesn't have to become an endless evening.

Tonight, try one pause at a familiar moment. Let your child supply a word, sound or movement if they want to. Then enjoy the next bit together.
